A Tribute to Joe Gibbs

GOOD AFTERNOON ALL….

I have been deputed by Charmaine, Joe’s daughter, to give the following BRIEF ACCOUNT of his life.

In a 2 Storey House, located on Tyrell Street, 64 years ago, Lyris gave birth prematurely to a baby boy who was named ERNEST GREGORY GIBBS.  He was later nicknamed by Miss Eva AS JOE, not derived from the name JOSEPH, but rather from the name given to the SAILORS who frequently came to the Carenage off the NAVY SHIPS of those times.  According to Miss Eva, he resembled the young Sailors.  The name Joe stuck with him as he journeyed through childhood from the  first school he attended..at TEACHER BLANCH.  He continued on to Primary School at WESLEY HALL SCHOOL and took extra lessons during his holidays  preparing him for the move to GBSS in 1959.  His mother worked very hard to ensure that Joe attended the very best school on the Island at the time. MAMA LILA, Joe’s grand-mother, made fudge that he would take to WESLEY HALL to sell to help with school expenses.

At school, Joe took part in all sports but his passion was found in CRICKET.

He played cricket every chance he got as his Cricket mate Richard McIntyre would have gone through in detail.  An opportunity playing cricket lead him to finally meet his father in Trinidad. Neville Gibbs introduced Joe to his rather extended family in Trinidad.  Whether Joe enjoyed that visit we will never know as he hardly spoke of the meeting.  We have learnt however, that Neville Gibbs died at the early age of 62 but Joe carried on several traits of his father.

THE IMPACT OF BULLETS IN TORONTO

By Neals J. Chitan

Saturday January 15, 2011: Last night, Friday January, 14th, 2011, I stood behind my former student, the father of another young Grenadian who was gunned down on Christmas Day in Toronto, as we gazed into the casket of his son Jordan Hosten.

As friends, acquaintances and supporters passed by the open casket at Scott’s Funeral Chapel on Weston Rd, to take a look and pay their respects, you could hear the cries of “that doesn’t look like him.” Indeed, the zombie-like remains lying there, fully deformed from the high powered impact of multiple bullets to the head had not the slightest

Grenada government investing in jobs and youth in 2011

St. George’s, January 15, 2011 (GIS) â€" The Grenada government is planning to spend more than EC$700 million on jobs, establishing a medical teaching hospital and other initiatives over the next 12 months.

The government’s plans were outlined Friday, January 14, by Finance Minister Nazim Burke as he presented the 2011 Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure before a packed hall at a sitting of the House of Representatives in St. George’s.

This year’s EC$783.4 million budget is 15.3 percent higher than last year’s EC$675.9 million.

Among the money budgeted, $12.6 million will be spent on the introduction of a new initiative to create employment and training for at least 1500 young people under the Grenada Youth Upliftment Programme (GYUP). Last year’s allocation to GYUP was $4 million.

“We believe that the current focus of the Youth Upliftment Programme on education, training and certification is good and necessary,’’ Finance Minister Nazim Burke said during the budget presentation.

The initiative will target young unemployed school-leavers, between the ages of 16 and 25, who will be offered employment or training at a private business, state-owned enterprise or state-sponsored programme or activity.

During the period of employment and training to acquire work skills and experience, the young people will receive a basic government-paid monthly stipend.

PM Thomas New Years Address 2011

While this is a characteristic Grenadian trait, this year’s outpouring of goodwill reflects the collective recognition of the deep economic challenges that enveloped our societies.
It speaks to the fortitude and strength of character of our people and our resolve to persevere.
Similarly, it also speaks to the true nature and character of most Grenadians who are desirous of pursuing a peaceful and god fearing life.

Most importantly, we should be thankful for the many blessings that we have enjoyed during the past year.
Despite the many odds, we are able to successfully navigate the turbulent economic waters, maintain social and economic stability and continue to lay the basis for future economic growth and development.

We have also been able to complete preparations to ensure that many projects will commence during the New Year. Projects, that will facilitate capital investment in infrastructure and
