Carenage cake sale Saturday

St. George's, July 29, 2010 – The Carenage Organisation for Recreation and Entertainment (CORE) will hold its first fundraiser to support programs of the group.

 Members have organised a cake sale that will be held from 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, on the Carenage, close to the former Empire Theatre site.

 "The site is now occupied by Spice Isle Imaging Centre and we are thankful for their permission to use the area,'' said a spokesperson for CORE. "We also thank Republic Bank Angel Harps who will be providing musical entertainment for the cake sale.''

Cleanup of Swing on Sunday

St. George's, July 20, 2010 – The LIME Tanteen Children's Playground – also known as "The Swing'' – is getting its first major cleanup since its official opening in June.

Members of the Carenage Organisation for Recreation and Entertainment (CORE) are planning to cleanup the playground on Sunday, July 25, starting 6 a.m.

The vision of CORE, an umbrella group of individuals and organisations, is to "build a positively vibrant community on the Carenage and surrounding areas for residents of all ages.'' It plans to encourage the "broadest volunteer participation possible in order to be successful.''

I happened to be listening to an internet radio station live from Grenada on June 9, 2010 at about 10.00pm. I found that the local calypso music was sounding real good, but at one point the on air personality became very troubling, distasteful and inappropriate for a listening audience including young minds.

Students urged to remain focused on education

St. George's, July 13, 2010 – Grenada's school-age children have been urged to use the current holiday period not just for fun, but also for learning.

The encouragement was given by Tourism Minister, Glynis Roberts, in recent addresses delivered at graduation ceremonies at South St. George Government School and Woburn Methodist School.

"Remember, learning never stops,'' said Mrs. Roberts, MP for St. George South. "Spend time not just playing, watching TV and sitting in front of your computers. But engage in productive activities such as reading and writing, learning new words and expanding your vocabulary.''

NDC elects new members to executive

St. George's, Grenada, July 11, 2010 – Members of the National Democratic Congress have made changes to two key positions on the executive of the party. They have elected Bernard Isaac as the NDC's new Treasurer and Vincent Roberts as the new Public Relations Officer.

The changes took place Sunday morning at elections held during the annual convention of the NDC at the St. Andrew's Anglican Secondary School (SAASS). Outgoing Treasurer, MP Glynis Roberts, declined to stand for re-election as did Senator Arley Gill, who went in to the convention as the sitting PRO of the NDC.

Prime Minister Tillman Thomas remains as Leader of the NDC.

Special ceremony in recognition of Mighty Sparrow 75th birthday

Some well-known Caribbean-American politicians in New York will be among special invitees at an awards ceremony on July 9, 2010 to celebrate Slinger "Mighty Sparrow" Francisco's 75th  birthday.

 Scheduled to take place at The Rotunda, Brooklyn Borough Hall, at 11:30 a.m. the ceremony will be attended by a number of elected officials, including Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, Senator John Sampson (NY State Senate), Assemblyman N. Nick Perry, , Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and NYC Councilmember,  Jumaane Williams.

Commemorative event in St. Mark

St. George's, July 6, 2010 – Scores of people, headed by the leadership of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), gathered in St. Mark Sunday, July 4, for a commemorative event.

They attended a service at the Victoria Anglican Church to mark the second anniversary in office of the government led by Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas. The celebrants further socialised at a brunch which followed the service.

A spirited NDC campaign led the party to an 11 – 4 general election victory on July 8, 2008.

The NDC recently embarked on reorganising the party's structures, including various organs and constituency branches.

Encouraging artistic youth

St. George's, June 30, 2010 (GIS) – Tourism Minister Glynis Roberts has called for more young people to involve themselves in artistic activities.

The Minister said government is doing its part to open avenues for the artistic talents of youth, and she is encouraging others to support the young people.

"This is a noble profession which has stood the test of time for centuries,'' Hon. Roberts said at the opening of an art exhibition at the National Museum in St. George's. The event was also to present
