St. George's, April 13, 2010 (GIS) – Members of parliament, including the official opposition, will meet Friday, April 16, with Dr. Carlyle Mitchell and other representatives of the Grenada team that successfully negotiated the recent maritime boundary agreement with oil-rich Trinidad & Tobago.
The meeting is in keeping with a Grenada government pledge to have public consultation on the agreement, which ultimately could lead to intense search for oil and gas in Grenada's waters.
Friday's meeting begins 10 a.m. and will be held at the ARD Building, Botanical Gardens, St. George's.
The series of consultation will continue into next week with a meeting on April 20 with officials of non-governmental organisations and other representatives of civil society.
Dr. Mitchell, a professor at the University of Ottawa and a former Permanent Secretary in the Grenada Ministry of Finance, will participate in the series of discussions starting Friday.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter David and Prime Minister, Hon. Tillman Thomas, will be heading to Trinidad next week for the formal signing of the maritime boundary agreement.
The various rounds of talks resulting in the agreement were piloted through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Hon. David has given the assurance that all issues surrounding the agreement, including proposals for exploiting and developing Grenada's natural resources, will be widely discussed and carefully handled.
