Prime Minister’s rescheduled visit to hurricane-hit St. Lucia and St. Vincent

St. George's, November 6, 2010 (GIS) – A one-day visit to hurricane-hit St. Lucia and St. Vincent & The Grenadines by Grenada's Prime Minister, Hon. Tillman Thomas, has been rescheduled.

The Prime Minister had planned to travel to the two countries today, Saturday, November 6, but the visit will now take place early next week.

Hon. Thomas, who will be attending a fundraising event of his ruling National Democratic Congress this evening at Rex Grenada, plans to lead a delegation to St. Vincent and St. Lucia to get a firsthand look at the damage wreaked by Hurricane Tomas last weekend.

The delegation is expected to comprise Health Minister, Senator Ann Peters; Junior Information Minister, Senator Arley Gill; and Chief Technical officer in the Ministry of Works, Cecil Harris.

Both St. Lucia and St. Vincent suffered millions of dollars in economic and infrastructural losses. There was no reported loss of lives in St. Vincent, but up to 15 people are feared to have died in St. Lucia.

Prime Minister Thomas and his ministers met in emergency session on Friday and a Cabinet subcommittee was set up to coordinate Grenada's assistance to St. Vincent and St. Lucia.

"If any country is to show lead in these circumstances, it's Grenada, given our experiences and the support we received after hit by Hurricanes Ivan and Emily in 2004 and 2005,'' said Sen. Gill, the chairman of the Cabinet subcommittee.
