Grenada and Mexico agreed to strengthen cooperation links




CANCUN, MEXICO, December 10, 2010 – Prime Minister Tillman Thomas and Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) met with Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Thursday, during the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP16).

The two leaders held discussions on bilateral issues between Grenada and Mexico as well as relations between Mexico and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and agreed to continue strengthening cooperation links.

They also discussed the situation in Haiti, climate change and Grenada assuming the chairmanship of CARICOM in 2011.

Prime Minister Thomas thanked President Calderon for the scholarships Mexico offered Grenada for studying undergraduate or post-graduate degrees in Mexico.

"Most of our students have graduated and we wish to thank you for this assistance," said Prime Minister Thomas.

He also congratulated Mexico on hosting the Climate Change Conference in Cancun.

The Mexican President hailed Prime Minister Thomas' performance as the Chair of AOSIS and the support provided for Mexico's actions in the preparations for COP16.

Prime Minister Thomas was accompanied by Permanent Secretary Ann Isaac while Under-Secretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Juan Manuel accompanied President Calderon.
